Political, Policy & Planning Section

The Political, Policy and Planning Section falls under the Mission’s Recovery and Governance Pillar. The Section facilitates the fostering of political and ethnic reconciliation in collaboration with national stakeholders, international partners, and UN Country Team. In addition, it provides political reporting and analysis and closely monitors the political and governance reform agenda of Liberia, including constitutional reforms, electoral and political party system reforms, and anti-corruption efforts, as well as other democratic governance issues in the new political dispensation. The Section interacts with key national agencies and institutions involved in the reform process, including political parties, the Governance Commission and National Elections Commission.

The Section works closely with the Executive and Legislature on both the strengthening of political institutions and examining the wider political and socio-economic implications of Bills under deliberation by the Legislature. The Section analyzes and reports on activities within the sub-region and liaises with regional bodies including ECOWAS, the AU, and the Mano River Union.

The Section also has officers outside of Monrovia, situated in four counties where UNMIL military currently have sector headquarters. As a result, the Section is able to monitor the strengthening of political institutions and the implication of reform measures at the grassroots level.
