congratulated Liberians for seven years of unbroken peace, which is a
remarkable achievement, but noted that substantial international

UN Envoy pays tribute to Ghana for its unwavering commitment to peace in Liberia

Monrovia, Liberia – UN top
envoy in Liberia, Ellen Margrethe Løj has hailed Ghana’s long-standing
commitment to the restoration of peace and security in Liberia,
describing it as “very special.” Awarding UN Peacekeeping Medal to
Ghanaian peacekeepers at two separate ceremonies, the first in Monrovia
and the second Buchanan, Ms. Løj paid glowing tribute to Ghana for its
sacrifices and contributions towards the consolidation of peace in
Liberia which has been forthcoming since ECOMOG in the 1990’s. SRSG
Løj stated that the Ghanaian dedication “has given Liberians the hope
of experiencing the same peace that Ghanaians enjoy.”

Grand Kru County, Liberia – UN Deputy Envoy, Mr. Moustapha Soumaré says
Liberia’s security services must earn the trust and respect of all
Liberian citizens if the Liberian National Police (LNP) is to remain
the vanguard of basic security for local communities. Mr. Soumaré made
this statement when he handed-over a newly-constructed Police
Headquarters and a barracks in Barclayville, Grand Kru County located
in the remotest southeastern part of Liberia, to the LNP to enhance its
activities. He also handed-over another Police barracks in Harper,

Liberian Judiciary Strategic Plan finalized, as UN Deputy Envoy promises support for reform initiatives

Monrovia, Liberia – A one-day working session, bringing together
representatives of the Ministry of Justice and Judiciary, has approved
the Strategic Plan for the Judicial Branch. This Strategic Planning
workshop validated decisions reached at a four-day planning meeting
held in Accra, Ghana in late October 2008, seeking to assist the
Judiciary in its the post-conflict reform efforts to enable it to
better play its role in maintaining the peace and stability of Liberia.

Liberian President and UN Deputy Envoy jointly commission a new UN-funded Prison

Sanniquellie, Liberia – UN Deputy Envoy Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu has
joined Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to commission a modern
prison constructed by the United Nations in collaboration with the
Ministry of Justice in Sanniquellie, the provincial capital of Nimba.
The project was executed by a local contractor under the supervision of
UNOPS. President Johnson Sirleaf applauded the UN for a “job well
done,” and hoped that the prison would “be a model that could be
replicated around the country.”
